things to know before getting invisalign

A smile is important. Individuals use their smiles to exude love and confidence. If you feel uncomfortable with your smile, you may struggle to fully express yourself around others. At Albany Dental, we value your oral health and overall wellbeing. That’s why we offer Invisalign in NW Edmonton as an option for effective and convenient aligning treatment for our patients.

Metal Braces Vs. Invisalign

In the past, traditional metal braces were the go-to for most individuals. Metal braces have been used for decades and are very successful at straightening crooked teeth. While they are effective, metal braces also come with a host of drawbacks, such as having to avoid certain foods and causing an uncomfortable feeling in the mouth.

Invisalign is a newer aligning treatment option, and it is very effective as well. Invisalign allows individuals to achieve a straight smile without many of the drawbacks of traditional metal braces. However, Invisalign is not an option for individuals suffering from severely misaligned teeth.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is a completely personalized treatment. When you come into Albany Dental for Invisalign, your dentist will begin by taking images and impressions of your teeth to create a three-dimensional image of your mouth. Your dentist can use these images to show you how they will move your teeth slowly into their desired position. With this data, your Invisalign custom series of aligners will be made, and you will begin treatment!

Invisalign is an Option for All Ages

Invisalign is recommended to individuals of all ages when they are looking for aligning treatment. Teenagers and adults are especially interested in Invisalign for their more low-profile look. However, as mentioned above, Invisalign is not for everyone, so make sure you get assessed at a dental clinic near you to see if you are a good fit.

Invisalign is a Commitment

Like metal braces, Invisalign requires dedication on the part of the wearer to be successful. You must be committed to wearing your clear aligners for at least 22 hours a day and be very diligent about brushing your teeth thoroughly after each meal. As well, you will have to visit your dental clinic in NW Edmonton frequently to ensure that your treatment is going as planned and so that your dentist can track your progress.

Invisalign Provides Fast Results

Invisalign works quickly, and you should start noticing small changes to the appearance of your smile within a few months if you are using your aligners as directed by your dentist. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are swapped out every one to two weeks to slowly shift your teeth into a new position.

You Will Still Need a Retainer

Invisalign is an excellent orthodontic treatment that yields great results; however, like metal braces, you will still have to put in work after the fact to maintain your new smile. When your teeth aren’t prompted to stay in their new position, they often will shift back to their old positions. This is why you will need to have a retainer fitted to your new smile, which you will be required to wear nightly. Luckily, in most cases, you won’t notice the feeling of the retainer at night, and it will be worth showing off your beautiful smile during the day!
